Underwater Hockey is a fast paced breathless fun-filled sport.

The action in Underwater Hockey happens on the bottom of a tiled swimming pool about two meters deep.  There are two teams of up to ten players each (6 active and 4 substitutes). Each player wears a mask, snorkel and flippers and has a glove and small stick in one hand that is used to push, pull, pass or flick a 1, 3 kg round shaped plastic coated lead puck along the bottom of the pool.

It is a non contact sport however some jostling and bumping may occur. You are not allowed to grab or hold on to another player and there are no off sides. Our games are mixed however at National Level there are separate Ladies Teams.

The intensity generally makes long dives impractical so the most effective strategy is repeated short explosive efforts with good timing and teamwork with rapid cycling of all 10 players through the 6 active positions.

Generally a team has 3 forwards – a strike middle centre, left and right wings, and 3 backs - left and right halfbacks and a full back. The goal trays are long narrow troughs placed on the bottom of the pool at opposite sides of the playing area. The objective of the game is to score as many goals as possible by driving the puck in your opponent’s goal tray. Goals are often scored on exciting break away plays or well timed 2-against -1 or 3- against -2 attacks.

Underwater Hockey is a truly 3 dimensional sport with players around you as well as above you. Underwater Hockey as a physical recreation sport is ideal for anyone who would like to become fit and good swimming skills are not required. The water cushions most impact and you can not fall over.

Underwater Hockey is now played in more than 20 countries and is a school sport in Tasmania and New Zealand. Australia is considered one of the best teams in the World Championships. We are lucky enough to have past World Championships Representatives in our team. Currently the Bullrouts or Tweed Gold Coast Freedivers INC has won the Queensland State Titles for the 10th consecutive year.
